About Our Home

Dr. Joseph J Bailey was born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1930. His family owned a small market in town, as well as a farm in the rural countryside. Dr. Bailey was very fond of the time spent on his family’s farm as a young boy. He went on to achieve great success as a respected and accomplished psychiatrist in San Diego, but was inspired to return to his agrarian roots in the early 1970’s. He secured a 40 acre plot of land in rural Valley Center, CA and planted over 900 avocado trees.

In the mid 80’s, Joe and his wife, Barbara attended a lecture of three architects in Balboa Park, one of whom was Ken Kellogg. They were taken by his work, and they set about designing a house with him which would serve as a family ranch home.

The result is this stunning home, designed by Kendrick Bangs Kellogg for Dr. & Mrs. Joseph J. Bailey in 1984. It took 6 years to build and was constructed mainly of glass and wood with rock walls which were sourced directly from the surrounding property. The house sits atop a hill, nestled amongst an operating avocado ranch which has remained family-owned and operated since 1972. Its high perch lends itself to breathtaking 360 degree views of the area through the floor to ceiling windows.

With 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, as well as two fire places and custom woodwork throughout, this home captures some of Kellogg’s most inspired work, blurring the line between nature and home, between architecture and sculpture. This is an outstanding example of the Organic Architecture for which he was known.
